How to Create Unforgettable Characters for Your Stories

One of the keys to a great story is the characters in it. The more unforgettable your characters are the longer they will stick in your readers mind and the more they will be talked about. You need to have several unforgettable characters in a story. It’s not just enough if you have one or two, almost all the important characters in your story need to have deep personalities. Your readers should be able to get to know them and understand them and feel the same emotions and feelings they feel while they read your story.

Before you write your story you need to plan out your characters, their personalities and traits thoroughly. The more you think about them and plan them, the more likely your readers will like them and remember them for a long time.

If you’re keen on learning how to create good characters then read all the tips below and practice them:-

1. Plan them ahead:

You shouldn’t just start imagining your characters while you write your story. If you do this it could affect the depth of your characters and make them appear less genuine. You need to plan them ahead and spend a lot of time imagining them and giving a lot of depth to their character.

How to Come up With Fantastic Story Ideas

How to Come up With Fantastic Story Ideas

Whether you’re writing a short story, a novel, a book or an article, you always need a good story idea. A good story idea is the basic necessity of writing anything. An idea will help you plan your writing and write an attention grabbing headline which will help you continue and finish writing an amazing story or article.

Sometimes it can be hard to come up with good story ideas, but by trying out the tips below it can become really easy to come up with good story ideas which can be used in the present and the future. These tips and tricks have helped me come up with many ideas for all the stories, books, articles and novels I have written.

Tips to come up with good story ideas:

Brainstorm Continuously: When you brainstorm for ideas, do it without thinking. The best way to generate ideas is to do it continuously, without stopping the flow. Our minds work in two phases, one of them is the creative phase and the other is the controlling phase. In the creative phase you create ideas, plans, etc. In the controlling phase your mind checks to see if the ideas you have created are good enough or if they need to be discarded.

The creative phase is sometimes known as writing with the heart and the controlling phase is sometimes known as writing with the head or mind.

So when you create ideas it’s best to create them with your heart continuously instead of controlling them with your head; as when you start controlling it, the number of good ideas you get will be limited. So create the ideas freely without making any effort to control it. Think up as many ideas as you can and write them down, even if some of them aren’t good enough and after you finish writing all of them, fish out the good ones from the bad ones – go for quantity and use the quality ideas you get from this quantity and leave out the bad ones.

Writing Fiction Vs Writing Non-Fiction

There’s a difference between writing fiction and non-fiction. I have learnt it over the years while writing both fiction in the form of poems, stories, novels, etc. and non-fiction in the form of articles, white papers, brochures, websites, books, etc. and other marketing materials.

When you write fiction:-

1. You need to create something unique, something different from the rest and something with twists and turns. I normally write my fiction story, first and I figure out my audience after I write the story.

2. You also need to build suspense, where you reveal everything at, or near the end. This is how you hook the reader in here, by creating suspense, as that’s what the reader expects here – to be entertained and made to go through a wonderful journey.

3. At the end, a moral is added to let the readers know what all this means and how the lesson learnt here can help them too. Sometimes it’s left as it is so that the reader can use their imagination.

When you write non-fiction:-

1. When you write non-fiction, you always write for a target audience. You want to write for someone after you find out; what they like, what they enjoy doing, and how the article or book or other marketing material you are planning to write, will help them.

2. Here you also reveal everything right at the beginning, either in the headline or in the first line, as you want to hook the reader in right away. This is because, unlike reading fiction, reading articles and marketing material is normally not entertaining and not planned and you want the reader to find your writing interesting and helpful right away.

The not so beneficial parts can be revealed later (after they get engrossed) in the writing, as this is not what the reader is looking forward to.

3. Non-fiction writing especially marketing material normally ends with a call to action, asking the reader to do something – this could be to buy something or download something or get a free coupon, etc.

These are the main differences between writing fiction and non-fiction. While writing fiction and non-fiction you need to keep these factors in mind and make sure you write them the right way.

Do you write fiction, non-fiction or both? Have you got any tips you would like to share with us? Do you know any other differences? Please share them with us in the comments box below?

Should You Write With Your Heart or Your Head

While writing fiction you have two choices; you can either write with your heart or with your head. One of my friends and I had a discussion about this a few months ago. He felt that you need to determine who your audience is, what they like and write with your head. I, on the other hand felt that you need to put in your heart and create something unique and decide who your audience should be, later.

When you write marketing materials or articles, you have to write with your mind, by keeping a target audience and an aim and who you’re writing it for in your mind. As here you need to please an audience to make a sale. But it’s completely different when you write fiction. People who read fiction are looking for something new and unique, something that will entertain them and has been developed without following any rules.

If you write with your mind, you won’t be able to write something unique. Once you put in too many rules and write for an audience it will affect your thinking capacity and will discourage you from creating something unique, new and powerful. This is why you need to let go of everything and write with your heart. When you write with your heart you will create a unique story that will connect with other people. Your audience will enjoy it much better and people will want to read it as there is nothing like it out there, they will want to enter this unique world you have created and find out more about it.

So next time you write some fiction, let go of everything and write it with your heart. Maybe after you finish writing with your heart you can use your head only to make it sound better. This way you will be writing with both your heart and your head.
