What do you think about all the online bullying?
Did you know that 13 million students are bullied each year and about 160,000 of them stay home each day in order to escape being bullied? Bullying not only occurs in schools, but also in the work place and of course online.
Before bullying was just reserved to places like schools and offices, but now it seems to have gotten a lot worse. People continue to spend a lot of time online this is giving bullies access to individuals they can target and bully over the internet. A recent case is the one with 15 year old Amanda Todd who committed suicide after being bullied both online and offline.
Here’s a video on Youtube which sums up her story:-
This video was uploaded just a few days before she committed suicide…
In the video she shows us that during a video chat, a stranger convinced her to flash herself to the camera. This stranger saved the photo and threatened her with it. He said that he would expose the topless photo if she wouldn’t put on a show for him. She later found out that this photo was circulating the internet and this caused her to go into depression. It was so bad that along with her family she had to move to find a new home and she also began taking drugs and alcohol.
This man who threatened her with the photo, created a facebook profile and placed this photo as the profile picture. After this she lost all her friends again and the respect she gained. Later on she was beaten up by a horde of girls, from her first school, who attacked her after they found out that she was flirting with a boy. People filmed it too. Her father took her home after he found her lying in a ditch. At home she tried to kill herself by drinking bleach, but she was saved after being rushed to the hospital.
Moving to another new city didn’t help, as she continued to feel depressed and people still troubled her and she was eventually found dead.
That’s a very sad story isn’t it?
What I can’t believe is that even after she died people have been sending out hateful messages. Of course there have been a lot of positive messages. But what’s so unbelievable is that after something so sad and agonizing, how can people have the heart to say more cruel things to her?
A man was recently fired for making a bad comment, a boy posted something inappropriate on her page too and there have been several more incidents.
I like social media when it’s used positively. But this is completely in the opposite direction.
I hope the people who started this especially the man who posted the photo, is severely punished. Although he should have been charged earlier for illegal distribution of child pornography, which is a criminal offence. Also I can’t believe facebook didn’t deal with this earlier. You’re not allow to publish obscene pictures on facebook and the social network should have spotted this earlier and suspended the profile. I also hope that the people who continue to post derogatory comments about Amanda take a good look at themselves before they post another one.
I am happy with the way a lot of people have reacted by showing their support for the girl and for anti-bullying. Also the support from the hactivist group, ‘Anonymous’ who have helped us spot the man who started this. It would also be nice if facebook can confirm that this is the man. Hope he’s properly dealt with and hopefully something like this will never happen again.
